What does the Academic Coaching Program (ACP) do?
The Academic Coaching Program is designed to promote student empowerment, engagement, and self-advocacy through peers supporting peers. ACP provides tailored mentoring to help students learn and practice executive functioning skills, engage in collaborative problem-solving, and develop the independent use of the academic strategies discussed in coaching sessions.
How can the ACP help me?
The ACP Academic coaching offers students the opportunity to practice executive functioning skills with their current course schedule and materials.
Executive functioning skills that may be addressed include:
• Organization and prioritization of course requirements and deadlines
• Strategies for focusing, sustaining, and shifting attention between tasks
• Test-taking strategies and study skills to improve recall of course content
• Self-advocacy and communication with instructors
• Motivation, goal-setting, and monitoring of academic progress
• Self-care in college and use of helpful campus resources
• Exploration of supportive technology and apps to enhance productivity
• Using accommodations provided by Student Accessibility Services (if applicable)
How does the ACP work?
Step 1: Complete this interest form with your schedule and areas of interest. You will be matched with a coach based on skill-building interests and mutual availability.
Step 2: Look out for an email from your coach welcoming you to the program! All of our coaches are Brockport undergraduate senior or graduate students.
Step 3: Schedule a 30-minute meeting with your coach. This first meeting will focus on you and your coach getting to know one another, discussing what skills areas you'd like to work on, and planning goals for the semester.
The ACP is tailored to you!
While we do ask for students to attend all scheduled meetings, you and your coach can determine a meeting schedule that will work best for you. Some students meet with their coach every week, while others may meet for less frequent check-ins over the course of the semester.
To prepare for your coaching meetings, always bring your class materials and an idea of what you'd like to focus on. Each coaching session is scheduled for 30 minutes.
We have digital resources and videos available to support your skill development which may be offered when appropriate. However, the ACP is not a prescriptive program and we're here to meet you where you are. We encourage you to communicate with your coach about your needs so we can adjust our support accordingly or make referrals to other campus resources when needed.
Let the fun begin!
