Request for Reduced Course Load (RCL)

You may be authorized to request a reduced course load (RCL) under the following conditions:

1. Illness or Medical Condition
2. Academic Difficulty
3. Final Semester of Study

If you wish to apply for an RCL and be certified as fulfilling USCIS’s full-course-of-study requirement, select the situation that fits your request and follow the listed steps:

In order to authorize a reduced course load based upon a medical condition, the student must provide medical documentation from a licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist, to to substantiate the illness or medical condition.
Academic Difficulty

A DSO may authorize a reduced course load for a student experiencing academic difficulties, but only on the basis of the following reasons specified in the regulations:

1. Initial difficulties with the English language
2. Initial difficulties with reading requirements
3. Unfamiliarity with American teaching methods
4. Improper course level placement
