ABOUT THE CREDIT-BEARING ENGAGED LEARNING EXPERIENCE
The Honors Engaged Learning Experience requirement is meant to enrich an Honors student’s undergraduate education by extending his or her learning inside and/or outside the traditional classroom setting. SUNY Brockport offers a variety of courses that foster intellectual growth through student-driven and/or experiential learning. Honors students may meet this requirement by participating in a 3-credit (or non-credit equivalent) experience that includes but is not limited to the examples listed below. A student may utilize more than one course or semester to obtain a total of 3 engaged learning credits (or a combination of credit and non-credit bearing experiences). The Honors Thesis (HON 490 or substitution) may not be used to meet the Honors Engaged Learning Experience requirement; however, the proposed course should be integrated into a student’s academic major and/or professional goals.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• DEADLINE: This form should be submitted for review by the Honors Director no later than the close of the second week of the semester you are enrolled in the proposed credit bearing experience. However, if you are currently enrolled in a relevant course, which you had not previously considered as an Engaged Learning Experience, you should contact the Honors College for possible assistance.
• Students seeking to propose a non-credit equivalent for this requirement should submit the form with the heading, “Honors Engaged Learning Experience Petition for NON-CREDIT BEARING Activities.”
• Students must submit the “Honors Engaged Learning Experience Course/Activity Completion Verification Form” and reflection paper by the last day of the semester in which the course or activity is completed. Failure to submit both documents will result in the course/activity not being recognized as an Honors Engaged Learning Experience.

REFLECTION PAPER GUIDELINES
-
Papers are due to the Honors College office by the last day of the fall/spring semester (last day of regular class time before finals week) in which the course contract or ELE was completed. Winter and Summer Session reflection paper submissions will vary depending upon when the class ends (the administrative assistant will provide individual students with specific details via email for these sessions).
Engaged Learning Experience reflection papers should explain how and why the experience strengthened or challenged your understanding of key theories, principles, and/or practices in your academic major:
1. In one paragraph identify shorter term goals such as completing a research project, a discrete community service responsibility, or internship and how those goals were attained.
2. In a second paragraph, identify longer term objectives such as professional, graduate school, or thesis preparation and how your experience connected to these objectives.
3. In a final paragraph discuss any impact your experience had upon your leadership and/or community service roles, particularly in the context of your major program of academic study or professional preparation.
Reflection papers should include:
• a heading with your name, date, course number and semester,
• have 1-inch margins,
• be double-spaced (without extra spacing before or after the line),
• be in 12-point Times New Roman or Garamond font, and
• be grammatically correct and free of punctuation and spelling errors. Too many errors may result in a request from one of the Honors College directors for a rewrite.
